Combining a worm gear stage with planetary gearing allows a single unit to achieve a high reduction ratio (from the worm stage) along with strong torque-handling capacity (from the planetary stage), in one compact housing.
Many worm gear configurations offer a degree of self-locking (resisting back-drive from the output side), depending on the lead angle and gear ratio — useful in holding or anti-reverse applications, though this shouldn’t be relied on as a sole safety mechanism without engineering confirmation.
Worm gear stages generally have lower mechanical efficiency (often 50-90% depending on ratio and lead angle) compared to helical or planetary stages, due to the sliding contact between worm and wheel — a trade-off for high single-stage reduction and compact design.
GPRO’s worm planetary gearboxes are configured to combine high worm-stage ratios with planetary-stage torque multiplication — contact our team with your input speed and required output torque for exact ratio options.
This configuration suits applications needing high reduction ratios with strong torque output in a single unit, such as certain material handling and industrial rotary drives where space and ratio requirements rule out simpler gear stages alone.
