Q1. How does a planetary gearbox work?

A planetary gearbox works through a sun gear at the center, planet gears rotating around it, and an outer ring gear — this arrangement shares load across multiple gear contact points, giving high torque capacity in a compact size.

A planetary gearbox uses a concentric, multi-gear design for higher torque density and a smaller footprint, while a helical gearbox uses parallel-shaft gears, generally offering a simpler design at the cost of a larger size for the same torque rating.

Well-designed planetary gearboxes typically achieve high mechanical efficiency per stage (often 95-98%), though multi-stage units will have combined efficiency slightly lower depending on the number of reduction stages.
